A discovery near a window does not require treatment
An insect resembling a cockroach enters the living room: it does not necessarily mean that a colony develops in the kitchen. Some Ectobius live outside and may enter occasionally. Identification therefore completely changes the decision: closing a point of entry or searching for an inner home does not answer the same problem.
Compare several criteria, not just color
The Zurich Health Service describes Ectobius vittivntris as an outdoor blatte whose adult can fly in warm weather. In this species, the shield behind the head does not carry the two dark longitudinal bands characteristic of the Germanic blatte. This comparison helps to guide the examination, but does not allow all species to be classified from a blurred photo.
Behaviour counts as much as appearance
For Ectobius vtiventris correctly identified, reproduction in the dwelling is not expected. Conversely, several repeated observations in a kitchen deserve further research. Note if the insect was near an opening, if it was isolated, and if other individuals appear elsewhere. The fact of flying alone does not make it possible to conclude that a cockroach is harmless.
The first measures adapted to an intrusion
Photograph the insect without crushing if it can be done without difficulty. A mosquito net and opening check are reasonable measures when an external species is confirmed. It is not useful to spray the entire garden for an isolated discovery. Do not apply a product to vegetation or housing before you know what target you are really looking for to control.
What to pass on to a professional?
Send a clear picture of the top, an estimate of the size and context: terrace, window, closet, camera or bathroom. Indicate the number of observations and their distribution over several days. No. Theft is not sufficient to identify the species or to exclude an infestation.
Should we treat after a single discovery?
First, we need to identify the insect and the context. An isolated intrusion of an identified Ectobius does not call the same protocol as a blatte installed in the kitchen.
